Sounds like an xorg problem related to your (older?) graphics hardware. I had graphics problems with composting off (yes, off) on a machine with Radeon M7500 graphics that was solved by fiddling with xorg.conf.
You might try copying /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the 7.10 installation to 9.10 and seeing if that changes things.
Good luck.

I can see that with 1/3 of your screen black it will be just about impossible
to try work with KDE. I will point you to the relevant file, but I am not on
Karmic so it might be different.... But you can try.
Go to a normal command-line (ctrl + alt + F1 or F2 or F3) and login.
Change to the folder:
cd ~/.kde/share/config
Backup the file first:
cp kwinrc kwinrc.original
Now use your text editor, nano or vim or whatever you know. Edit the file named
'kwinrc'. Example:
nano kwinrc
In that file, look for the section titled '[Compositing]'.
Remove any lines directly under it, but not the next section (which will be in
square [] brackets.)
That *should* switch the compositor off. To turn it on, try adding these lines:
GLDirect=true
GLMode=TFP
As an example, here is a snippet from my own file:
[Compositing]
GLDirect=true
GLMode=TFP
GLVSync=true
[Desktops]
Name_1=
...
Do you see how the 'sections' work here? I hope so :)
So, decide on or off. Add or remove lines as you can. Save the file. Then
restart Kwin -- flip back to KDE - use ctrl + alt + F7 or F8 (I can't recall)
and then logout and login again.
I hope that helps a little. I still am not sure it will even work.
