Urgent help needed - desktop/ screen Kubuntu Karmic does not function at all!

'3D compositing': pls. briefly explain where and how to find it?

Normally, I would look for such a file via Dolphin and check/ edit it
via Kate. But the problem I have to deal with, even disables me to
work with Dolphin. Also both the Alt-F2 command line and the K-menu do
not function properly.
