Firstly: You are using the wrong command. It's:
sudo apt-get update
then:
sudo apt-get upgrade

Secondly, something is wrong on line 56 in /etc/apt.sources.list
I am fairly sure it's your new ppa addition for KDE 4.2.3

Thirdly:
The problem, Steven, is that you want to fly before you can walk and you are
not prepared to do the minimum to even get past crawling.

a) Keep a notebook of "stuff that worked". Refer to it often.
b) Do not get greedy -- don't go for the "bling" and the latest software just
because it's there. Stick to what works. Stick the to the defaults. You don't
have the patience or the skills to mess with customizing things.
