Fast user switching does not sign you out. (technically, it is just a 
pretty front end to switching between concurrently running X sessions).

If you log in as Pete, then user switch to Jill, then Pete is still 
logged in with all his applications running etc. When you switch back, 
it is not a full log in again.

How fast it is for you I cannot say, depends on how fast your pc is, how 
much ram etc. But it should be much faster than a full logout/login 
cycle. Try it and see.
