I have had the same behaviour on my Dell Inspiron 1420 running 8.04 
Hardy for some time now. It just suddenly appeared, I have to start K3b 
to get any cd or DVD "automounted". The only thing I can think of that I 
have done was to run Powertop - it suggests killing the HAL poll on the 
unit but that should go away after a restart - as it always is suggested 
every time I run Powertop

The other weird thing is that I can not eject the CD/DVD using the 
button on the player but have to use "eject device" from K3b. Irritating 
but I have found no solution for getting the automounting etc back.
