Sounds like you need to right click the files and decompress them. Usually when opening a file in kate (or other text editors), it'll warn that making changes to files may corrupt it if the file is a compiled executable or a container. I'm sure you can see why if you think about it..

When I downloaded them, they suggested choosing the .gz files for Linux instead 
of zip.  I googles Blocklist to locate them and selected pretty much all of 
them, but they are gz files.
