Has anyone figured out how to play a .wmv file in Intrepid KDE 4.2

I have tried all the players that say they play .wmv's, however, when I 
attempt to play, for instance 'International.wmv' a movie, I get a screen with 
scrambled squares of colors and shapes with no accurate picture or sound.  I 
looked to see if there were adjustments in the players to correct this.  
Apparently many users can play them, but I can't.  Is this bug specific to my 
computer?  It don't make any sense.  Some say use vlc, some say xine, some say 
smplayer, it seems to work for others on several players.  Is there a 
dependency that I am not aware of?
