Were Intrepid updates the reason I lost my sound on the Intrepid partition?

I think that would be better worded as "I don't have sound in Dragon
Player" as you say that sound in other applications works. Maybe the
sound in Dragon Player is muted?

That won't help in Linux like it does in Windows, because in Linux
there is separation between user files (your settings, such as mute)
and the program's runtime files. This is partly a security feature,
and partly because *nix was designed as a multi-user OS. Instead of
reinstalling, try removing the configuration files for broken apps.
