Were Intrepid updates the reason I lost my sound on the Intrepid partition?

Of course not. But if the situation is truely that the sound stopped
working after an update, with no other changes made by the user, then
that is a bug regardless of the solution. Though you may be correct in
that Stephen may have made other changes to the system. Now going
through his messages for the past few days, I see that he may have
borked apt during a Java installation.
