I have made so many changes today, Yes.  But I don't remember much about the 
past several methods of cure attempted.  I suspect I have apt-get several 
times.  I have been onscreen for 11 hours.

I used the PPA to upgrade to KDE 4.2.  I remember using apt-get as follows:
apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras.

By the way, thanks for being so helpful, I am a little stressed by the 
difficulty to solve the problem.
