Hi Linux affictionados,
I just got fed up with windows entirely and migrated to Ubuntu gnome 8.04. Trying to learn to do as many things as I can on the Linux box so I can get rid of the ancient laptop with Win2000 on it too, before it dies also.

Have questions...not sure if I'm supposed to start one thread per question or just ask them all in at once. So I'll ask two right now.

So far, I figured out how to make the multimedia stuff work on Ubuntu... and how to make Skype work. I like to imagine that I really do have the brain equipment to at least cut and paste destructions on the terminal. Sort of. Need to learn more stuff about how linux works, which is pretty much everything. Have been going through the terminal destructions on youtube in an attempt to get past the pathetic cluelessness level. Wonderful stuff for newbies to Linux on youtube. Here's the link for the little "course" I've been at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtIe4nL6BmY&feature=channel
So - I'd recommend youtube for newbies who need general info about how to make certain things work in Linux - it's been a great teacher!

OK, my questions:
Part of why I ditched windoze was that I had been impressed with a journal/calendar program on ubuntu KDE on the last long term support dapper drake on someone else's computer eons ago. I'd like to find it now - anyone know what that was called?  ...and how I could get it? Is there a version of it on the new(er) KDE desktop that I'd get in a package with it if I installed KDE?

My other problem with deciding about and installing the KDE desktop is that I'm not sure how to get or install KDE... or how to find that old journal/calender program either - or if a "newer" version of that journal/calendar/time manager is already present on the "new" KDE, or if I should use the 4.2 KDE or would it be better for me to go with a more stable, but slightly older version of KDE, etc.

* Which KDE version would that be and how can I get and install it?
So, I've stuck with the gnome desktop...but not sure there's a
difference that big enough to bother with.
* Can anyone give me a general sort of plus and minus review of what are the difference
between KDE & gnome? What do I give up if I use KDE vrs. gnome?

...and if you are still capable of responding to further run-on sentences....read on. ;)

OK, second question:
Because I came from windows, I imagine that I have to have some sort of way to scan for viruses, so I downloaded ClamTk, which is a virus scanner. So, of course, I thought I need to update it. Found the place to do that on the GUI. However, this virus scanner says...that I have to be logged in as root to update signatures.

Except I AM logged in as root, but I'm using the GUI, which doesn't somehow recognize that I'm already logged in and doesn't pop up anything so I can verify my root password, etc.

Do I use the add/remove apt-get or ...duh? I have no idea how to use the terminal to update the signatures. This is what I'm assuming is implied by me having to be logged in as root before I can download.  Feel like I can only make clueless assumptions here. Need some help. I'm hoping to learn how to do such things as "log in as root" that I can apply to other situations, as well as be able to update the signatures on  clamAV.

OK, the version is: ClamTk Virus Scanner build clamAV 092.01 sig. 2/2/09 which has GUI version 3.08 Right now I have ubuntu 8.04 that I've been updating regularly on a P4 single core dell with 512 RAM.

Thanks in advance!

Frani
