It would appear that on Jan 31, Constantinos Maltezos did say:

As a matter of fact that works. But by now I've started using a ~/bin
script that temporarily copies an rc file to ~/.xinitrc, calls startx,
and on xsever exit continues operation with rm ~/.xinitrc ...

Thanks for the clue though.
