update notifier

have you gone into kpackagekit and disabled updates from there? There are a 
couple of places where you can edit settings for the tray icon (under the 
Settings area) as well as the what/when/where for updates (in the Edit  
Software Sources area). 

You can also simply uninstall update-notifier-kde
