Have you thought about using konqueror. I just tried exactly what you want (I
think) and looked inside a tar.gz archive using the kpart bit of konqueror,
selected at random a bunch of files using the little + sign on the folder
graphic of the files listed opened a second pane in konqueror, navigated to the
folder where I wanted to put the archives' files, dragged/dropped to copy them
to this folder. Done. You can also use find file with wildcards to get a common
subset like *.png, drag them from the result list. This I have just tried to,
all on KDE 4.3 and Kubuntu 9.10.
