Yes, on your older Pentium 4 machine (IIRC) Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (and 8.10 and 
9.04) should work without problems.

About your new computer, according to:

you _should_ be able to get to the grub menu in Jaunty; also there seem 
to be more recent kernels then you are using ...
