Not a discussion, it's a rule to this list and any other Linux list out
there. Best check around before defying convention, while asking for
assistance.
Here's the general take on it. Personal mail, no prob. You and your
recipient know exactly who said what to whom and why. On a public tech
oriented list, that others may search through for answers using a search
engine like google, it's far easier for someone to read the help request
in some sort of organized manner, problem at the top and answers/
clarifications beneath. Finding the answers on the top ...well that's
just plain idiotic because you're making the reader scroll down to see
what happened. "It's a dark and dreary night." doesn't come at the end
of a book. Nor is the killer identified on the first line.
It also says "I don't give a crap about anyone else other than me." and
the answers do not benefit any one else. That is the deal with
Linux ...you start off in gift-debt to the community with gifts that
cannot be paid back directly. So, if you make no other contribution, you
edit your question / replies in a manner so that the next guy can
benefit as well. At some point the problem you have can be -shared- to
it's conclusion, with a few seconds of editting. Now, you have paid back
a "tithe" to the community. And the list doesn't have to bear the load
of 100 people asking the same question.
Taken in that light, I'm sure you'll see the point and the wisdom of the
bottom-reply convention. Heh, then YOU'LL be taking the next top-poster
to task! :) Ric
