If you are sure that the computer actually starts running when you 
press the power on button, I think it indicates some sort of graphics 
problem. Either software or hardware.

Can you get a standard Ubuntu install CD to boot into the CD's trial 
desktop system?
If yes, we'll try troubleshooting the installed software's graphics 
handling.
If no, we'll try troubleshooting hardware problems.
