You can't *upgrade* from the live disk (iirc), only from the alternate disk. 
But it would be pretty easy to simply install 8.10 from the live cd, as you 
already have a separate home partition so your data would not be 
overwritten. Just run the installer and set  up your partitions as normal, 
making sure you know which ones are which. You would only have it format 
your "/" partition (/dev/sdb1).
