I have gone through at least two major upgrades of debian using apt-get dist-
upgrade.  It seems to take a couple of passes and at least two reboots, but so 
far the results have been entirely successful for me.

I have not yet tried a dist-upgrade with (k)ubuntu, but I am about to.  I plan 
to download a jaunty alternate iso tonight and attempt a dist-upgrade 
tomorrow.

Standard warning apply as always: back up anything you're not prepared to 
lose.  I have had good luck migrating existing installs to new hardware using 
the mondo archive suite.
