You can also implement the "pure" ttf files, i.e. without installing
from the repositories.

So I decided that I would be MS free!

This is exactly the problem. Although there are very good metrically
equivalent fonts, you will never be able to send out _your_ design.
Since your design largely depends on the fonts you are using and those
are not available on the target system.

So unless you are sending your fonts to the recipient and have them
install them, this won't work.

Of course, the ultimate solution to preserve your design and also to
prevent any potential issues from the conversion from OpenOffice to
MS-Office is simple:

Print out as pdf and send this. It also works for Scribus. The only
disadvantage is that your friends will not be able to work on your
documents, anymore (at least not easily)

Another problem is, that with vista and office 2007. a new high quality
MS font family was introduced to windows and Mac that does not even have
metrically identical substitutes on Linux.

Furthermore, their license prevents using them without having a suitable
MS Operating System.

Kind regards
Eberhard
