Are you using Konqueror, Firefox, Thunderbird, directly entering an smb:
file name, or mounting an smb folder or what?

I have never seen anything like this myself in the years I have used OO.
The only time that seems to happen is if I click on a URL pointing to a file
name, but it also seems that I get the password prompt from Firefox, not
OO.

If I open a 12 MB document from my network server, it takes a long time,
like 10 seconds (forever in Internet time) before the document opens.
