I think what you are looking for is Advanced Desktop Effects Settings -> 
Extras -> Window Previews.  You may have to install 
compizconfig-settings-manager and/or compiz-fusion-plugins-extra.  This 
shows a preview of what the actual window contents look like when you 
cursor over the window icon in the taskbar.  It can be configured to do 
this for all windows, or just the windows on the current desktop.
