Thanks! I'm used to the RedHat init statement to really shut down X with
an "init 3". I noticed there is no "inittab" in /etc with Kubuntu too. I
installed the bin file using a terminal and X went ape. Using Envy there
was nary a burp in the barrel and my framerate as reported by GLXgears
went up 50%. It worked for me beautifully. So, that is what I'd suggest.
