I think it's the ubiquitous notion that seems to be common out there 
that gnome is easier for Windows users to adapt to than KDE.  It has 
less items in it's menus to confuse your average user with, and it tends 
to coddle them more.  I don't like it personally, but at least you can 
install a few packages and be running Kubuntu with a little effort.  I 
live for all the applets I use in panels, though I'm sure if I stuck 
with gnome long enough I'd get it setup the way I like it.

It might be the LTS/KDE4 thing, but it's not like Kubuntu was a common 
choice before that started.  Perhaps they don't want to have to explain 
the name "Kubuntu".  Explaining "Ubuntu" is hard enough already.
