I have two gigs of ram. According to System guard I have 1.9 used and 55
meg free. Swap shows 39 k used and 3.2 gig free. To me that seems about
normal.Right now I have six windows open counting this compose window.
Use all the ram first then swap if necessary. Processor [ Intel dual
core 3.2 GHz ] load idling seems to run about 12 percent.
Finally found a breakdown on the color scheme. Application [ running
apps ] memory seems to be running about 500 meg, buffered memory about
100 meg, and cached memory using the rest of it.
Playing a DVD raises the processor usage to nearly 100%. Application
memory doesn't change but the buffered memory starts a constant upward
slant. Swap doesn't change. After a while buffered memory levels off at
about 1 gig and cached drops to just under 1.5 gig [ numbers are in
total memory used ]. Turning off the Kafeine instantly drops memory
usage to 579K and processor usage back to the idle percent.
Here's a thought. This is a 64 bit machine but running 32 bit version of
8.04. My laptop is a 64 bit processor with 64 bit 8.04 and works fine.
Could the 32 bit version not be using the whole processor?
Would a change to 64 bit 8.04 help?
