It seems to me that the big problem here is that of monitors that don't
correctly return their capabilities (not that uncommon especially with
laptop screens). Right now it looks as if those who have such hardware
are worse off than they were in the era of (say) RedHat 4.2, in that
there is no config tool which will allow you to easily tell X what the
monitor can do and so the only options look like an ancient live-CD (and
copy the xorg.conf that it generates) or hand-editing xorg.conf.
