Latest 8.10 updates mess up KDE

I just did an update on my boys box and now there are all sorts of problems with KDE. Apps take 
ages to load - if they actually do....
  I noticed that skim (skim - smart common input method platform for KDE) gets installed and 
places an icon on the kicker bar. I closed it and now can't type anything anywhere (inside KDE)> 
If I logout I can type in my password to login again but then nothing once I'm logged in.

Anybody else notice this?
Is there a fix on the way?
