Donn, I had almost the same dream. In my one directories are also rooms and
files are objects and there is a virtual assistant, who brings me the skype
phone when I'm being called or the notepad if someone contacts me on icq.
Unfortunately I discovered recently that the idea has been already
implemented and a research in the AI field has been done :-( funded by X
millions of € and $. Check this: www.smartkom.org

About the 3d desktop as a startup the virtual space without "fire effects"
would be enough. I remember there was a demonstration of such kind of thing
already with kde2 and now the compiz and beryl projects did touch the
topic. Unfortunately my stupid intel graphics card will never do this with
two monitors - how can I punish intel - I I wish I would be david and intel
was goliath, but this turns to be another dream :-D.

Integrating apps into such a desktop would be hard I agree, but a 3d desktop
is a good thing to start with. Mail me when you start working ;-) I would
write pyhton (panda) code or whatever I can code then.

regards
