There was someting with the default fonts in kde control center.

I was working on a dioctionary project and kdict didn't show the phon chars correctly, though I used kcharselect to check this.
Then when I changed the default fonts to something standard like helvetica it worked.

pretty strange that only kde is afected. Did you check the font paths in KDE - may be they are messed up?

let us compare also versions.

/usr/bin/kfontview -v
Qt: 3.3.8b
KDE: 3.5.9
Font Viewer:

try to purge and install - means better login to the console (not using X) and reinstall kcontrol. I would purge and apt-get install but people suggest apt-get --reinstall install. the first will may be lead to purge of most of the kde stuff ... I don't know which would be better for you. may be try apt-get --reinstall and if it doesn't change anything the dpkg--purge

dpkg -S /usr/bin/kfontview
kcontrol: /usr/bin/kfontview

regards
