These all sound like _kernel_ issues.  I hope you realize that it's _really_
easy to keep old kernels around while allowing everything else to upgrade. 
I never did use a kernel from Hardy - the gutsy kernel worked, and the
2.6.26-5 kernel that I got from a _very_ early version of Intrepid worked. 
So I kept my gutsy kernel until I found another working kernel, then
upgraded that, meanwhile everything else was upgraded to hardy.

For kernel-only problems, it's not much of a solution.
