This could possibly have been a bad mistake.

First of all, if you do not like manpages fsck --help is your friend. 
The very first option that you get (-p) is used for "automatic repair, 
no questions"

Secondly I had great success in fixing Windows and Unix filesystems 
doing just this.

Admittely it also failed once (on a screwed Ubuntu filesystem, by the 
way ;-). But my balance of success and failure tells me, that it mostly 
works.
