I cannot access the original mail or replies, lost them and
the install. First I then tried the fsck /dev/sda6 but that
was obviously going to take an age and I didn't want to sit
at the machine typing enter enter enter for 3 questions
that kept coming up to ignore and fix errors. I thought if
the drive is that badly screwed, no sense in trying to fix
it. So I tried to do a backup of this partition but K3B
just blows away DVD's like there's no tomorrow. So I went
to do the fsck, had a look at the options and used the -cy
options, but that was going to take forever too so
interrupted it and completely messed up kde.

So then I decided I'd install 7.10 on that drive (hda), copy
my existing data from hdb that I'm using now and make sure
it is all working ok. Then I could sort out the problems
with this drive hdb, i.e. partitions not in disk order and
install 8.04 on here, but when I tried to update 7.10 on
hda with all the updates, adept said something (ubuntu
modules) was broken and could'nt commit changes.

So I'm sitting here giggling like a two year old, drooling
into my lap and blowing bubbles with my saliva!

AFAICT, all the drive problems started when I tried a couple
of flavours of BSD, that *is* the reason the partitions are
out of order on my hdb drive and I'm fairly certain it
screwed the hda drive too. Whether the hda drive is
permanently screwed or not I don't know.

I do not have up to date backups of my most recent data, but
it is not life or death if I lose anything, just damned
annoying.

So I'm going to try setting hda just as a temporary
partition that I can access from hdb, copy my home data to
it and then reformat hdb and install 8.04 as 7.10 seems to
be broken and won't commit any changes because of this
broken package, unless someone has a better idea or can
lend me a gun. ;)

Right now I'm going to walk slowly into town and back,
slowly cos I have arthritis, and breath some cold fresh air
before I do anything else.
