Also... When using nvidia-settings make sure to load in your changes on 
boot time.  It won't automatically do this for you...

For KDE the way I found is to make a script in ~/.kde/Autostart called 
nvidiasettings.sh (or whatever you wish to call it)

#!/bin/sh
# Script to load in Nvidia Settings on X startup
nvidia-settings --load-config-only


Then make sure to:

chmod a+x ~/.kde/Autostart/nvidiasettings.sh

so it is executable.

For Gnome you can simply call it in System>Preferences>Sessions to start
