I'd always thought that a single beep showed that the POST (power on self
test) , had run to completion, with no problems. I don't know your mobo, but
it's possible that the cpu fan doesn't start until a specific temperature is
reached. I'm only guessing, but it may be worth letting the machine run for a
bit longer, and see if the fan starts. As others have said, there are
safeguards in place, so as to shut down the machine in the case of
overheating of the cpu.
Just some thoughts.
