If nothing appears damaged, then that's all you can check without a multimeter!

That is a good indication that it is the right place! I don't think
that you can insert them backwards, and the baby is sleeping so I'm
not about to go digging for a motherboard to check.

With all that you've mentioned, I would plug another fan in (wouldn't
even bother sitting it on the processor) and see if it spins. If not,
then take the motherboard back.
