I've tried this again, and seem to have a working panel on the top of my screen - but the system tray only has half the items of the original tray.  Only the battery applet seems to be missing of the important items, though.

Well, I _could_ do that, but "why?"  Ksysguard does the job beautifully, so all I need is to figure out how to do it in the panel.  I really can't imagine it not being possible.  Though I couldn't imagine not being able to move the panel either, but google suggests I can't.
