Yes, I keep some of these backups on DVD too, but what I do is use an 8GB USB 
flash drive to accumulate /home/ backups and photograph files (which I don't 
store in my home directory) until I've got enough files to fill a DVD. Then I 
burn DVDs just the once and clear out the flash drive ready to start again.
