also should have meantioned that some plugins don't work with ff2, 
especially openjava.  So I installed sun-java6 and created a link as 
follows:

/usr/lib/firefox/plugins$ sudo ln -s 
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.06/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so .

installed kaffeine-mozilla and ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/kaffein* 
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/ and it works for most
