http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=75725
has a thorough explanation about it.

It has to be set up on GMail site and all labels induced by filtering will
produce, on the client side, a folder.

For instance I made a "kubuntu" label and a filter that assigns this label if
the "To:" field is "kubuntu-users at lists.ubuntu.com".

I had POP already activated when I checked the radio botton for IMAP and it
has stayed this way since.

In a IMAP client I see a kubuntu folder and, when connected, I get all the
headers. They are all there since the very first received mail. Not advisable
for a slow connection, but then, I suppose, one can simply delete old staff.

All this does not affect KMail where I do POP and get mails "normally". Once
Kmail downloads them, they will be marked as read next time I'll access
through the (say Thunderbird, Evolution, you name it) IMAP client.
