In case you want to have a go at knode (or similar) you got to have access at
news.gmane.org    port 119
and subscribe to:
gmane.linux.ubuntu.user.kubuntu

You still need SMTP to send posts and I've never tried that via GMail.

Unless anyone else here has done it before and can say a word about it, you'll 
have to do the testing yourself.
