I am a crotchety old-ish bastard myself, and I find freenode's irc (and not 
the other cesspool irc servers) to be rather exactly unlike the stereotypical 
irc hell other places are. As a matter of fact, imo the #kubuntu-* channels 
for example are much friendlier than , say, this mailing list is at its 
worst :) And this is a pretty friendly list overall.

I use each form of help channel as needed, whether email list, forum posts, or 
irc chat. I don't seem to have a real preference of one or the other really.
