Scan for wireless networks

How do I scan for wireless networks? I know my wireless works because 
someone in my local set it up to connect to the network at the local 
community college where we meet, and that always works just fine. But I 
don't know how tp find the networks at places like coffee shops that I 
know offer wireless connections.
