putting KDE onto existing Ubuntu 7.10

1. Open a terminal in Ubuntu (or hit ctrl + alt + f1 which should take you to 
a full-screen one)

2. Make sure apt is updated:
sudo apt-get update

3. Then try:
apt-cache search kubuntu-desktop

4. If you get no result (you should get one, by all accounts) then tell us 
what you see (what messages etc.) This would be a mystery!
Else:

5. sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

That (after a while of downloading etc.) should get KDE installed. To boot 
into it, you'd flip back to X (ctrl + alt + F7 or F8) and then logout of 
Gnome. When it comes back to the login screen, there should be a menu 
somewhere to let you choose the Window manager - find KDE and then proceed.
