Graphic interface installation

Hi,
I'm new to linux in anything but compiling C/C++ programs and I'm trying to
install it for the first time.
I downloaded Kubuntu 6.06 from their own website and tried
installing it, but figured I installed text only, then I referred to a HOWTO
and it seems that it was supposed to give me a graphical interface
installation from beginning, but it is not there, anyone know why?
Now I'm trying the server installation and will try to install
the graphical interface from within, but it would be easier to install it
one time alone…
I'd also like to know if there is a way for me to install a more
recent kernel along with the installation o kubuntu or if I'd have to
install it the way it is and then install something newer? The
2.6.15doesn't seem to have IPsec in good shape, and I'd need to learn
to use it
for the application I have to develop here.
Thanks,
Gustavo.
