HP also provides printer support - they have developed the open-source HPLIP
(HP Linux Imaging and Printing) package that supports most (over 1000) of
their printers, scanners and all-in-ones. I'd say that at this time, HP
provides the best open-source support. I'm happily running both an ancient
LaserJet 4m Plus and a relatively new Photosmart C6150 All-in-One with no
problems. I can even check ink levels or transfer photos from the built in
memory card slots on the Photosmart from Linux using the HPLIP tools.
