movie dvds not being recognized

Hi again.
I actually have little hope of getting an answer about this, as my searches
for clues on the internet seems to make an implication that nobody knows much
about the subject. Where people have posted similar problems, there are
generally no answers offered.
In any case, the problem is that usually when I put in a video dvd, Kubuntu
seems to think it's a cd-r. Some dvds will eventually be recognized
correctly if I eject and insert it a few times, but most never are.
Does anyone have any clue?
Also, where do I find the configuration file(s) for automount? When I insert
a CD or plug in my Rio Karma, I have to manually mount them. In fact, with
my Rio Karma, I have to mount it with sudo and would like to do so without
it, aside from wanting it to automount. Of course, that last should be
workable by adding the "owner" option in fstab, right?
Anyway, I'd like to say I've appreciated the help I've previously received on
this list. It's a pretty cool list.
