If you install via apt, you do it as root, and the plugin is installed in the 
global plugin directory with the program.  I can't remember the exact 
location, either /usr/lib/firefox or something like that.

(I install firefox in /opt because I don't want to install all of the gnome 
dependencies that the Ubuntu install brings in.)
