Dear Steven,
I would open a gmail account just for testing purposes. You can then
configure that account to accept pop and smtp from the web logon, follow
their instructions to set up an account in mail software (very much like
the one you have already) and test to send. Btw you should have port
465, login with full gmail account (name at gmail.com) and Security should
be SSL and Plain (not TLS that "server support check" indicates, then it
just hangs in the outbox...)
If that works - your ISP is doing something funny/strange
If that does NOT work - something is wrong with your KMail installation
