That's a hack that lets you use the Windows driver under Linux.  I'm pretty 
sure this NIC you're looking at is the infamous "Broadcom Wireless" like in 
Mom's Dell.  Yes, you have a Dell too.  That's got to be it then.  Crappy 
pain in the ass chipset from hell, I fear.

I hate hardware problems.  I gave up on Mom's laptop.  It didn't seem 
impossible, but success was always just out of reach.
