Thanks for the suggestions. I redid the install without 
unplugging the router and just left it and eventually a 
time out occurred trying to get security patches. However I 
was misled by the installer window message which had stated 
just prior to this at around 70% completion, that there was 
less than a minute to go. Previously I had waited maybe 15 
mins or so before aborting. 

So now I have a new install of 7.10 and it successfully 
boots.
